Education Design Outdoors

As colleges and universities prepare to reopen amid stressful times, education designers are refocused on providing spaces that can potentially relieve stress. That space is more times than not, outdoors. Educational research shows learning and studying outdoors increases students’ wellbeing, be it physical, mental, or social as early as preschool. Green spaces have a positive effect on many aspects of human wellness.

Embrace student-centered design to reopen colleges

Student-centered design, inside or outdoors, in these challenging times supports social distancing and includes easily cleanable surfaces. Following health guidelines, small groups are being encouraged over the large student packed campuses we have seen in the past. College students will no doubt be spending more time with a roommate or just a few friends in study groups and after hours. Outdoor is the place they will go to get recharged and social distancing will be the new normal.

Better outside

Consistent exposure to nature helps elevate mood. There is enough to be stressed about – grades, homesickness, and making new friends are just a few. College students should be able to relieve that stress and spend a little time outside. Sure, they can have a picnic on the grass, but if there is comfortable furniture in that outdoor space, it should not add to their stress. Furniture that is consistently exposed to the elements should possess certain attributes if it is to be comfortable and remain functional over time. The furniture used in an outdoor setting on a college campus should be inviting, be easily positioned to maintain distance, and be cleaned frequently to make sure it looks good in any weather.
