Lessons from the Frontline

Blog – April 20, 2021

The term “frontline” is typically referred to in conversations about conflicts and battles. Those on the front lines are the ones who are the first to take the fight on, giving those behind the front lines time to prepare and strategize. Healthcare has been on the front lines of the battle against COVID for more than a year and the fight is not over yet. Durable, cleanable and seamless furniture supports healthcare’s infection control initiatives.

Healthcare design lessons

For more than 30 years, Kwalu has designed furniture with those attributes, with chair frames, tables and casegoods made from a proprietary material that looks like wood but doesn’t act like it. You know, furniture that will not swell and crack or lose its sheen and appeal under the constant onslaught of daily undiluted bleach cleaning. The pandemic has taught that in all healthcare settings, furnishings for the future feature uncompromised furniture surfaces.

Lessons from below the surface

Following a year where everything is questioned, now more than ever, healthcare environments must put their best face forward. No one wants to question the cleanliness of the chairs or tables in the doctor’s office. No one wants to have to wear gloves to go to the doctor for fear of what they could contract from the previous patient. It is important to note that metal and wood chair finishes are protected but only by a thin layer of topical coatings that do not hold up to intense cleaning or over time. Compared to Kwalu healthcare furniture, with its hard-wearing acrylic-based co-polymer surface material, which goes all the way though the outer shell.

So, what’s next?

The lessons of the past should prep the way for the future. In the last year, we have learned that keeping some distance from one another has helped us move forward. It is a practice that will no doubt keep us moving forward into cold and flu season and through whatever is on the horizon. In healthcare settings, smaller waiting and reception areas or separated zones within those areas is what’s now and what’s next. Kwalu waiting area easy-to-clean healthcare furniture is flexible in that it is easily positioned, and multiple seating designs are available with linking tables. Kwalu healthcare furniture is designed for what’s next, and that is keeping hospitals clean for the long-term.
