Thoughtful Social Distance Hospital Design

In some areas of the country, hospitals are treating a growing number of people with COVID-19 and related symptoms. They are also treating emergencies and other health issues not related to the pandemic such as broken bones, severe pain, and chest pain. Pregnant women continue to go to the hospitals and their doctor’s office for checkups for issue related consultations and procedures. Its what hospitals do but today, they are doing it in a very different way. Now more than ever before thoughtful hospital design must consider social distancing.

Designed with safety in mind

Patients have concerns about going to the hospital and doctor’s office. Guidelines being implemented in hospitals and doctor offices to help keep patients who stay and patients who come for check-ups remain safe. Hospital design is laser focused on safety for all. Surfaces are actively disinfected and cleaned between patients and multiple times throughout the day. Waiting areas and exam rooms are being reconfigured to expand the space between chairs so that everyone can remain at least 6 feet apart and practice social distancing. The furniture itself is being carefully considered as well. Seating with high touch points that have obvious wear can also be home to bacteria and viruses. No one is comfortable sitting there.

Clean surfaces are calming and inviting

In addition to spacing hospital furniture to create social distancing, the frequently touched surfaces, such as the arms of chairs and tabletops must be cleaned and disinfected frequently. If the surface is damaged or looks dirty, patients will be hesitant to take a seat. They may even be resistant to making future appointments. Furniture that can be cleaned and disinfected with bleach and continue to look like new for years is preferred.
