Trends in Higher Education Design are 20/20 in 2020

2020 is the start of a new year and a new decade. The focus for higher education design trends in 2020 is on these three things that will drive design in this decade — the flexibility of design, technology in design, and wellness in design.

1. Flexible Campus Design That Cater to Diverse Preferences

At the end of the day, higher education design has to remain as flexible as the courses of study. Students are learning differently, and they require spaces that cater to their preferences. It is important designers remember for whom they are designing. Today’s student wants a collaborative space where they can exchange ideas. These modern collaborative rooms are multi-purpose spaces, part office with desks and work chairs and part living room with comfortable lounge seating with built in tablets and ottomans.

2. Design That Keeps Technological Evolution in Mind

Digital research, mobile test taking, personal blogs and websites are pushing out large screen learning in college classrooms. Every student has a phone, a tablet and a laptop making connect ability the top priority in getting a diploma. Education design trends are on the fast track to furniture with built in chargeability, secure WiFi connections, and tables and chairs with integrated lighting and touch screens for learning and entertainment.

3. Prioritizing Wellness in Higher Education Design

Design for wellness on college campuses, when done correctly, supports the wellness of the social, body and mind. Walking has always been encouraged on campuses but in 2020 walking may not enough to support physical wellbeing. Workout spaces specifically designed for kick boxing, yoga, body weight training, personal training, Pilates, cycling, dance classes, swimming and other activities are on the rise. Come to the calm room to de-stress. Calm rooms and indoor garden spaces with comfortable seating and aroma therapy are on the rise for better mental health on campus. Community spaces created inside of high-traffic common areas guide students to spend more time with peers.
