What’s Next for Hospital Design

Hospitals remain on the front lines of the pandemic fight. The time to consider how hospitals return to a new normal and just what that will look like is right now. Healthcare design for the future has to consider the safety of all – patients, guests and staff.

Emergency waiting furniture

Emergencies are an unpleasant fact. It will be tough to forget the time when so many people went into the hospitals while family and friends just had to leave. Waiting rooms are going to fill once again with anxious people waiting for news about their loved ones. It is important the seating and chairs in these areas of the hospital stand up to heavy duty and quick cleaning considering the high level of activity. Fresh and clean design are the top priorities.

Exam room furniture

Furniture and, specifically, surfaces have to be bleach cleanable in a healthcare environment. Bleach cleans 99.9% of germs and other pathogens. Not all furniture is compatible with bleach cleaning. Wood swells and cracks over time to create areas where these germs get a foothold and grow. Metal furniture surfaces corrode over time. Kwalu’s healthcare designs, like the Modena Guest, Valentia Motion, Caterina Guest – Slat Back are bleach cleanable.

Outpatient surgery furniture

Specialty healthcare locations reopen and turn their attention to their waiting spaces. These are typically outpatient clinics that require the patient have someone accompany them for the procedure. Again, furniture, like Kwalu’s seating with bleach-cleanable frames and solid surfaced occasional tables meet and exceed the standard. Soft surfaces require cleaning too. Vinyl is easy to clean thoroughly making it the best fabric in healthcare. Clean fabrics and allow drying. Disinfect fabric, do not saturate, and rinse fabrics with clean cloth and water, do not saturate and allow time to dry. One hospital design does not fit all, only the best bleach cleanable furniture does.
