Expo Workshop

Disinfection is One Thing, Eliminating Environment as a Source of HAIs and Low HCAHPS is Everything!
Co-presented by Clorox Healthcare & Kwalu

Healthcare facilities must consider infection prevention & disinfection protocols during the design process. No patient should leave a healthcare facility sicker than when they arrived, yet 12% of patients acquire an infection or other complications during hospital stays, and 1 out of 9 of those patients will die from infection-related complications. Comprehensive environmental cleaning and disinfection has been clinically proven to significantly reduce the spread of infection-causing pathogens via surfaces. However, challenges arise when healthcare surfaces are not designed for easy disinfection or when the wrong disinfectant is used. We will consider a system approach for optimal design.

Partner with colleagues and manufacturers to build a patient room that incorporates design, function, and a safe environment for healing. Assess disinfectant compatibility with healthcare surfaces. Explore how disinfectant surface compatibility affects multiple stakeholders in the healthcare setting. Identify key challenges that Clinical and EVS staff face when disinfecting a patient room.

Science Meets Style: Dissect, “Dollarize,” and Redesign the Patient Room
Co-presented by LifeBridge Health System & Kwalu

Thoughtful choices in designing patient rooms potentially contribute to reduced healthcare-associated infections and better HCAHPS scores. Moderators will introduce the results of a study conducted in 2016, examining patient room materials including wood, stainless steel, and solid surfaces. Surfaces were tested before and after being compromised to simulate healthcare environments. Attendees will hear the candid, real-world challenges of maintaining high design in the harsh healthcare environment that battles constant chemical cleaners and abuse. Attendees will explore how to “dollarize” the risk to hospitals based on Medicare reimbursements and discover avenues to merge science with style.

Explore how to identify a hospital’s costs for HAI outbreaks and low HCAHPS scores. Examine the challenges in creating stylish patient rooms that are designed to last. Discuss durability and the types of surfaces that play a role in infection prevention outcomes. Learn the results of a new study on healthcare patient room surfaces and their implications for design.
